Superstar Signs For Canberra

EXCLUSIVE: A superstar player from the US is set to be unveiled by Canberra United as the capital side continue to build an explosive squad ahead of the new W-League season.

It’s understood the deal is about to be announced and the player is a huge star who will give the club and the league a huge boost, say insiders.

United have already built a squad that some are tipping for championship glory so with this superstar talent arriving shortly, expectations will be even higher.

Last season’s W-League Golden Boot Michelle Heyman from Central Coast and Matildas star Sally Shipard join coach Ray Junna’s ranks this season.

Returning from injury is striker Caitlin Munoz while Ellie Brush, Emily Van Egmond and Ellyse Perry form part of a strong defensive unit. Keeper Lydia Williams, currently in South Korea with the Matildas at the Peace Queen Cup, is set to resume her spot in goals.

United were beaten by Sydney FC in the semi-finals last season and the previous year Canberra made it to the final only to be beaten by Brisbane Roar in Queensland.

I am worried that we might be getting too cocky!!!! Some other squads are sort of ok also.

Brisbane Roar Women squad: Casey DUMONT (Goalkeeper), Laura ALLEWAY (Defender), Karla REUTER (Defender),Clare POLKINGHORNE (Midfield), Brooke SPENCE (Defender), Joanne BURGESS (Striker), Kim CARROLL (Defender), Elise KELLOND-KNIGHT (Striker), Alicia FOOTE (Striker), Lana HARCH (Striker), Aivi LUIK (Midfield), Rebekah STOTT (Defender), Tameka BUTT (Midfield), Amy CHAPMAN (Striker), Erika ELZE (Defender), Lauren COLTHORPE (Midfield), Emily GIELNIK (Striker)

On my count 13 (out of 17) of this squad have played for the Matildas.

plus Tseng and Superstar (who we can only rate as probably Marta or similar).

14 internationals. Not bad, considering Cian is also as good as most centre mids in the comp.

Canberra United has released most of their line-up for this year’s W-League Competition. If you were a betting person, they look the goods.

Canberra retain the services of both co-captains and current Matildas Lydia Williams as goalkeeper and rampaging centre-back Ellie Brush. Australian representatives also retained include Matilda Grace Gill, U17 midfielder Kahlia Hogg, Emily Van Egmond, the tough schoolgirl representative Cian Maciejewski and international teammate Jennifer Bisset. Other notable's include the Sykes twins Ashleigh (Matilda) and Nicole (Young Matilda), dual international Ellyse Perry as well as the flamboyant Shu O Tseng, a Chinese Taipei international.

Canberra United will be boosted by the return from injury of Matilda Caitlin Munoz, the return of Matilda Sally Shipard, and Matilda Leah Blayney who is back from the USA. United have also recruited three new signings from the now defunct Central Coast Mariners; former captain and defender Caitlin Cooper, Lyndsay Glohe and last year’s Golden Boot Michelle Heyman, all of whom are Matildas.

On the season's recruitment, Coach Ray Junna stated “the quality of the signings we have been able to make have given us excellent depth and we can look forward to a promising season ahead”. I think we could all agree on that. As long as the experienced and well credited coach Ray Junna can gel all these great players together, they should provide some entertaining footy this season.

Best of luck Canberra United!

Personally, I cant wait to see you're girls play, and although I support the roar in the A-League - I have taken Canberra United as my own in the W-league :)

United miss out on US international
Thursday, 28 October 2010
by Russ Gibbs, CanberraUnited.com.au

Canberra United has unfortunately been unsuccessful in their negotiations to sign USA international striker Natasha Kai for Westfield W-League Season Three.

CEO of Canberra United, Heather Reid said that “Kai, who has 67 caps for the USA and 24 goals, was very keen to sign for the club however some last minute obligations in the United States will now prevent her from being able to sign for United for the full season through to February 2011”.

United supporters may still get to see the superstar in green at some stage in the 2010/11 Westfield W-League because the door has been left open for Kai to join Canberra United for the second part of the season.

Reid noted that “our negotiations to bring Kai to Canberra have, unfortunately, been unsuccessful. We had agreed to terms with the player and we were seeking an international clearance when her last minute obligations in the US curtailed her potential move.”

Whilst missing out on a world class talent is disappointing, Canberra United still boasts a powerful squad and there’s a high level of confidence that the Club will be a force in the new season which kicks off with an away trip to Perth Glory on 7th November.

Wow, that signing would have been huge for us. Hopefully it still does eventuate later in the season.

Unlike the past seasons, up front shouldn't really be our Achilles heel.
