Canberra United sign Lydia Williams and Joceyln Mara
Canberra United has confirmed Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams will return for the 2009-10 W-League season and Belconnen United state league one custodian Jocelyn Mara will be her understudy.
Mara came to Canberra from Gundagai to study last year and gained a place in Belconnen's premier league reserves. The 20-year-old beat a number of ACT premier league players for the second goalkeeper spot on Canberra United's roster.
"Since watching W-League last year I've been excited about trialing and I've got stuck in and just been training really hard for it," Mara said.
Williams returned last week from the United States where she was part of the Chicago Red Stars inaugural team in the new women's professional league.
She was understudy to Swedish national goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson, and while the 21-year-old didn't play any games she said she had returned a better player.
"I think I can just read the game a lot more," she said. "I think I am stronger, better with crosses and quicker."
