United makes offer to bring Matildas striker to Canberra

CANBERRA United has targeted Matildas striker and Golden Boot winner Michelle Heyman in the wake of Central Coast's sudden exit from the W-League.
With the Mariners withdrawing from the 2010-11 competition due to financial difficulties, United officials tabled offers to Heyman and her Central Coast teammate, promising defender Caitlin Cooper, on Friday.


Heyman's signature would be a massive coup for a United side lacking a genuine goal-scoring option.

The reigning W-League player of the year, Heyman was a last-minute call-up to Australia's triumphant Asian Cup side in May.

Capital Football chief executive Heather Reid said, ''I believe they're quite keen to play with Canberra United.'

''An offer was made to them yesterday, and we're waiting to hear from them early next week after they consider that.''


Rival clubs Sydney FC and Newcastle are also expected to clamour for the duo's services.

But Reid hopes the lure of playing alongside Canberra's existing Matildas representatives is too good to refuse.

''Obviously they'd be wanting to play with players like Sally Shipard, Lydia Williams and Caitlin Munoz, who they know from the national team,'' Reid said.
