A-League Expansion Feasible Future? Empty A-League Expansion Feasible Future?

Thu May 14, 2009 4:36 pm
This could probably belong in the A-League sub-forum but I am putting it here because a Canberra A-League bid is beckoning for A-League expansion in the feasible future.

Firstly, I would just ask the question: How much do you think the A-League can expand to? 12, 14,16?

I believe within 10-15 years it can get up to 16 teams but who will make up those numbers?

Adelaide United
Brisbane Roar
Central Coast Mariners
Gold Coast United
Melbourne Victory
Newcastle Jets
North Queensland Fury
Perth Glory
Sydney FC
Wellington Phoenix
11- Melbourne Heart
12- Western Sydney (unfortunately)
13- Canberra United
14- South Coast
15- Tasmania
16- Geelong/Darwin/Another NZ team

That 16th team is a real hard one to choose.

Other possibility is that Wellington go due the AFC desire to shunt them out of the comp. That leaves 15 teams. Or Wellington does go, we don't have a 15th/16 teams and just have a 14 team comp.

Or we can have a 15 team comp. Don't see why that work. FFA not wanting a bye? Who cares??? honestly that is a crap excuse.

Whatever happens I hope the FFA, don't rush into it, even if that means holding off a 13th/14th team for a while.

A Canberra team can wait a few more if that means the league can stay top quality.

EXCITING TIMES FOR THE LEAGUE!!!!!

CANBERRA 4 A-LEAGUE!

Nice Post.

I don't know if the league can hit 16 but 15 definitely. Possibly 16 but Geelong will need to build a football stadium.

15 teams with the bye for me..

Wellington will get kicked out, and Canberra & Western Sydney will take the next spots along with Melbourne heart to make 12 teams. After that it will be South Coast FC and Tasmania...
After that it is difficult but i believe there wont be any more teams from NZ

I honestly think that we can get that 12th team!!! WEstern Sydney just is viable.

And the 16th team will probably be a new Auckland team, even though the New Zealnd Knights were a failure, I think they should redo the team, Auckland Knights, build a little rivalry in NZ to build up football and that would benefit us too, because the FFA gets the profit.

Either another NZ team, or NONE!!!
After all it is the A-league

^^^^

HELL NO. We can't go back to Auckland again. The only reason they got it is because they only had 8 bids so that's what they had to do.

We saw that they failed with the NZ Knights.. sometimes getting 1,000 crowds *shudders*

14 teams for me.

Adelaide United
Brisbane Roar
Central Coast Mariners
Gold Coast United
Melbourne Victory
Newcastle Jets
North Queensland Fury
Perth Glory
Sydney FC
10- 3rd Victorian team (after getting rid of NZ)
11- Melbourne Heart
12- Western Sydney (unfortunately)
13- Canberra United
14- South Coast/gong

That makes 3 Qld, 3 Vic, 1 WA, 1 SA, 1 ACT and 5 NSW

I'd like to see a tassie team, but I just dont think they'll get it off the ground. AFL is king down there.

I think a Tassie team will come before a third Victorian team.

i don't think Tasmania are ready yet, because they need to build a football purposed stadium.

I also think the A-League should probably be a 14 team competition with a "top 4" finals or no finals at all.

This is how it should be:

QLD: -NQ Fury -Brisbane Roar -Gold Coast United

NSW: -Newcastle United Jets -Central Coast Mariners -Sydney FC
-Western Sydney -South Coast FC

ACT: -Canberra Athletic

VIC: -Melbourne Victory
-"Melbourne Heart" (Melbourne City)

TAS: -Tasmania United

SA/WA: -Adelaide United -Perth Glory

With Wellington being taken out of the comp, the no. of teams would come to 14

I think the new teams will come in this order:
2010/11: Melbourne Heart & Canberra Athletic
Western Sydney takes Wellingtons spot

Some time after that South Coast and Tasmania
