Heart goes out to Van Stee Empty Heart goes out to Van Stee

Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:12 am
Dutchman Henk Van Stee has landed the job of inaugural coach at A-League expansion outfit Melbourne Heart.

Van Stee, who parted company with De Graafschap in March as the Netherlands outfit tumbled towards relegation from the top flight, could be unveiled as early as today by the team set to join the competition in 2010-2011.

The one-time Sparta Rotterdam midfielder has close connections with Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek, who had an advisory role on his appointment.

Van Stee, who is due in Melbourne within the next 14 days, has been looking for a new opening after falling out of favour at De Graafschap, who returned to Dutch football’s second tier just a season after being promoted to the Eredivisie.

A former youth team boss at the youth teams of AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, he beat off the challenge of eight other applicants to grab the top job.

A Melbourne Heart insider said: "We thought we was the best equipped of the eight candidates. There’s a big Dutch presence at the top end of Australian football already and we like the direction that has taken.

"He can’t start recruiting officially until October, but it’s obvious that the sooner he gets here the better because there’s a lot to be done before we enter the competition next season.

"We’ve given this a lot of thought. We haven’t rushed into it and we’re convinced it will turn out to be a wise choice. We thought recruiting a well-credentialed foreign coach would be our best option."

Van Stee, 48, is thought to have signed a two-year deal after jumping to the head of a pack, which is believed to have included names such as Ruud Gullit, Aad de Mos and former German great Lothar Matthaus.

The Heart’s structure is fast taking shape now with Scott Munn, who played a key role in setting up the bid application for the Gold Coast AFL club, the chief executive.

Peter Sidwell is the chairman and a handful of directors including Michael Catalano and Manny Galanos who have links to the Victorian Premier League are on the board.

"We believe we’ll provide a credible alternative to the Victory. We want to be known for the style of our football and we’re sure the marketplace will be big enough for both of us," the insider added.

The Heart will play out of either Etihad Stadium or the rebuilt Olympic Park.
