Disapponted that this game isn't on TV. Should be a great match. I see a crowd of around 1000 if the rain holds out around 800 if it does rain.

I also have a slight feeling that we will win- 1-0. Goal to Tseng.

Draw was as good as a win: Junna

Canberra United will head into their Round Four clash with the Melbourne Victory on Saturday full of confidence despite remaining winless in their 2009 Westfield W-League campaign.

With losses to Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC in the opening two rounds, head coach Ray Junna believes that last weekend’s come from behind draw with the Perth Glory was as good as a win for his side.

“Coming back from two-nil down and to almost pinch the victory was definitely a positive in the team’s character building,” Junna said.

“Even though it was a draw, it was more like a win psychologically for the girls so going into the next game we’re certainly in the right frame of mind.

“Hopefully we can use this newly found confidence and keep on rolling on.”

A possible turning point in Canberra United’s season, the result last weekend saw the side move off the bottom of the ladder and confident ahead of take on the Victory, a side they’ve never lost to.

“We’ve just been unfortunate with the goals we’ve conceded due to our inexperience,” Junna said.

“Hopefully the players learn from their mistakes and not allow for soft goals which will see us on the other end of the score line.”

Junna praised his young side’s mental toughness and fitness as they stuck at it for the full 90 minutes and came from behind to record their first point this season in 37 degree heat.

“Our players have never thrown in the towel so to speak, always encouraging them to keep on going because it is a 90 minute game and at the highest level results usually do favour the team that plays for the full 90 minutes,” Junna said.

“Games certainly are not over until the final whistle so just by hanging in there you never know.”

“They’ve really done well in the last three games in that aspect and I think we’ve got a young and mentally strong team.”

Despite remaining winless after three rounds, the players remain very positive about the season as they look to replicate their first season feats of contesting the Westfield W-League Grand Final.

“Training has been good all the way through the campaign, I certainly can’t fault them at that,” Junna said.

“Even when we lost the first couple of games, I didn’t see any signs of players being disappointed or down in the dumps.

“We’ll just keep on keeping on and plugging away.”

AS I am currently on the "Gong", and will be until my next holidays, I won't be able to attend any games.

But good luck to the army and hopefully you make some noise. Thumbs Up

Canberra records first victory for 2009Saturday, 24 October 2009 by Chris Gottaas, CanberraUnited.com.au Canberra United has recorded their first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over the Melbourne Victory in Round Four of the Westfield W-League at McKellar Park.

Goals from either side of the break from Chinese Taipei import Tseng Shu O sealed the home side’s maiden victory of 2009 and put their season back on track in a dominant display.

The home side continued their impressive form from last weekend’s come from behind draw yesterday when the side looked dangerous in attack and comfortable behind the ball.

Playing with the usual three strikers, Canberra United pressed forward from the kick off and had the bulk of the opportunities in the first half.

Canberra’s first shot on goal came after only seven minutes when Tseng collected the ball on the right wing, beat a defender and played the ball into the box but captain Ellie Brush could get enough power on her header to beat Melbourne custodian Melissa Barbieri.

Controlling much of the possession, Canberra United were able to dictate the play and were nearly rewarded in the 14th minute when midfielder Emily van Egmond’s volley nearly dipped below the crossbar from the edge on the penalty area.

Two minutes later, Melbourne gave their hosts a scare when a ball into the box took a deflection to Vedrana Popovic directly in front of goal but the striker couldn’t hit the target as she redirected the ball just past the far post.

The strike combination of Tseng, Ashleigh Sykes and Jen Bisset was proving difficult to handle for Melbourne defenders as they were continually back peddling with through balls putting them on the back foot.

Canberra’s patience with the ball eventually paid dividends when Tseng opened the scoring in the 27th minute.

A perfectly weighted through ball from Van Egmond across the deck found Tseng in full flight who beat the off side trap before a quick pair of feet saw her step around Barbieri and finish into an empty net.

Not content being up by one, Canberra United immediately pressed for a second and it nearly came minutes later through Ashleigh Sykes but a stellar save from point blank range denying the home side.

With her second goal in two games, Tseng began playing with the flair and confidence of someone with bright purple hair as the striker continued to find space in behind the Melbourne backline.

With a narrow lead at the break, Canberra United couldn’t have started the second half any better when Tseng netted her second of the match only three minutes after kick off.

Van Egmond played Ashleigh Sykes down the right wing before playing a ball in behind the defence as Tseng ran on to it and got a faint touch to see it past Barbieri and the ball trickle over the line to the delight of the 856 in attendance.

Ten minutes into the second half, defender Rebecca Kiting was handed her first appearance for the 2009 campaign and showed no sign of the back injury that had kept her sideline.

Kiting had an immediate impact but couldn’t hit the target with her header from an Ellyse Perry free kick after Ashleigh Sykes was brought down in the corner by Melbourne’s Maika Ruyter-Hooley.

Provider of the second goal, Ashleigh Sykes nearly became goal scorer when she snuck in behind the defence and beat the off side trap but fired her shot just wide of the near post.

Down 2-0, Melbourne began to play the football which saw them sitting third coming into this weekend’s fixture as they pushed forward to reduce the deficit.

Solid defending saw shots blocked and crossed cleared as Canberra’s net minder Lydia Williams was rarely tested.

Sykes got a late chance to put her side even further ahead after she again found acres of space between backline and keeper after a through ball from Perry but the striker couldn’t get enough on her shot as Barbieri came charging off her line.

Eventually the final whistle went as Canberra held on to record their first win of the season in the very important fixture.

Canberra United co-captain Ellie Brush was delighted with the team’s effort after the match and believes that the side is starting to reap the rewards of Junna’s style of football.
“It’s all just starting to click with the new formation so I’m really happy with the way it turned out today,” Brush said.

“We’re very happy with the win but not to concede is something that we spoke about during the week so it was a fantastic effort by the whole team.”

Woot!

What a great victory... that is the Canberra of old. Tseng is magic, what a game she had. Also Bissett played well as did Perry, Brush, Williams and Maciejewski.

Tseng looked fantastic this week. Gill looked decent, kudos to Perry and Brush - they saved us a few times and played some fantastic long balls to the front.

I think the only thing we need is to finish better - could have been 5-0 if we put away all the chances in the second half.

Very good game from the girls. Hopefully we can continue to build on it and get a win "away" next week. Hopefully a good showing from the Capital Punishment army will get them home against an outfit that has played brilliantly this year.

here here.

I was actually expecting us to ht 1K. It was our average last year, and you could not get a better day than that.

Hopefully these solid performaces can see us get some bigger crowds down the track.

don't leave it up to everyone else? why weren't you with the army?

but on the match, we totally dominated, MV didn't really have any really good chances to score.

whereas we could've had 5 or 6 if we took our golden chances.

I'm not sure what it is with Melissa Barbieri and playing Canberra at McKellar. Last year letting in a 30 yard speculator in the dying stages to lose the game and yesterday coming off her line to let in the 2nd goal. As a National Keeper she's got pretty poor positioning and playing against the understudy and with the National coach watching she should be concerned.

Maybe if as much effort went to keeping as she does whinging, she might become a good keeper, but not with efforts like yesterday.

Maybe she get's Syked out playing against us.....*groans from the outer*

I do agree with that but, Lydia Williams is another keeper who is caught off her line. That has happened numerous times in such a short time.

YEa mate I agree wth that. She seems to be doing that a lot ths year. Hopefully she has gone over it with the GK coach because some of those goals will prove costly at the end of the year.
