Hooker Not Interested in applying to be United Coach

Robbie Hooker says he won't put his hand up to be Canberra United's head coach again, despite the club's chairwoman Kate Lundy urging him to reapply.

United started advertising for a 2009-10 head coach yesterday using the same independent process as last year. But Hooker- who coached the team to the inaugural grand final last season- said he would not apply.

Hooker launched an attack two months ago against United, and accused the club of being "amateur-hour operation" for not letting him know what was happening with the position.

He said at the time that every other W-League club was probably in a similar position for not being able to finalise contracts while Football Federation Australia was still reviewing the first season.

Hooker said he was disappointed he hadn't been directly asked to continue on.

"If they had asked for applications I think it's disappointing because it doesn't say much about what they think about the job that we have done," Hooker said.

"I don't think there is any need for me to apply, they know who I am, they know what I have done, if they want me they will ask me."

But Lundy said yesterday she would be encouraging Hooker to apply- through exactly the same process he did last year.

Canberra appointed Hooker last year through an independent process which wsa seperate to his role as ACT Academy of Sport women's coach.

Lundy said Canberra United's management committee had decided to go through that independent process again and hoped Hooker would apply.

"Last season we decided to have an open process and we decided after the first season we would do that again," Lundy said.

" ... That said I've always been encouraging of Robbie Hooker to apply, I'm hoping that he plans to."

The recruitment process for the head coach has been delayed by two things: the FFA's review process of season one, and the delay in the appointment of an ACTAS coach.

Applications for the ACTAS women's coach job closed in January but the process has since stalled. A possible move forward in the process could come when new ACTAS general manager Gerrard Corradini starts of June 1.

Even though the ACTAS coach won't necessarily be United's coach this year, ACTAS will still be contracted to provide services to the W-League team, including fitness training and sports science.

Lundy said Canberra United couldn't afford to wait any longer on the coaching front- particularly with the first period to sign players opening on July 17.

Application for the job close on June 10 and Lundy said Canberra United would announce who the season 2009-10 coach would be before the end of June.

The new season of the W-League is expected to start in October.

lets be realistic we can't really afford (both economically and tactically) to go searching for anew coach. plus he knows the local scene like the back of his hand

it said in the canberra times yesterday that hooker didn't want the job unless he was directly asked to do it, so if united still want him they have an open door.

c'mon united sign him up!!
