Next Round of Expansion? Guessing a 3-5 years. Not 2011/2012
Sat Jun 06, 2009 4:50 pm
I'm wondering when the next round of expansion, will most likely take place.
TBH, I think the FFA should have a maybe 3 seasons with 12 teams: so 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013. That would probably be the best way of running the A-League. And I think that is what the FFA will do.
I think it is pretty much certain that they won't got to 14 teams in 2011/2012.
That leaves us, most likely waiting until 2013, for an A-League team.
You may have to face the fact that this is the most likely equation. Maybe not 3 year break of expansion could be even longer.

we should e-mail the FFA and ask if we don't get in this time around.

I think if we don't get accepted as 12th spot, then the only chance for Canberra to have a team in the next 4-5 years would be if the Canberra bid got to take Wellington's spot in the A-League as they are not viable to compete in an AFC competition. You could argue otherwise, but whats the point- there is no good reason to keep them.

agree with you thom. That is the only most likely scenario, for us to be in the league in the next 5 years, if we don't get in this round.

if what i suspect is true and the FFA are trying to use the J-league's structure with expansion and a second tier, then i think that the signs are good for either western sydney or canberra team.
just look at the j-league's history and you'll see what i mean. http://www.j-league.or.jp/eng/history/

There is no talk of a J-League structured A-league/A2-League.
With the talk of the 2nd tier comp, it is more if a South Korea structure.
With no promotion/relegation. Just a 2nd tier comp.

I agree. It's going to be more like the international justice league. Superman and Batman are always going to be in the top flight. Blokes like Aquaman, The Green Lantern and Thor stand no chance of promotion. Especially Aquaman, he's s**t house.

I think the FFA Cup would be a better alternative then a non promotion-relegation system.

Just leave Wellington be, that's not in our control anyway and NZ's inclusion in our league is more positive than anything.
We don't have to rely on such a negative scenario as a team being booted. The A-League WILL expand to 14, it's just, as the OP speculates, a matter of when.
I agree with RaidersCampese6, there will have to be a period of consolidation after 2 successive expansions, 4 new teams. The talent pool may've been stretched a little, short term, and the A-League's standard needs to grow again.
But on flip side, growth is good for the game all round, and more teams = more opportunities and more games so an improvement in standard, longer term and a more attractive league all round. Along with getting a foothold in markets like Canberra etc... and building those pathways in these areas, juniors right through to NYL and the local A-League team.
2013/14 sounds alright, but I believe the A-League may opt even a season sooner, like 2012/13. I've noticed the MLS expanding like wildfire recently, despite the wider economic downturn. They're expanding by something like 6 teams in 4 seasons or something. Some once again, might understandably question this, but I think the idea is the sooner you get in an establish a team in these markets, the sooner you get the culture up and running and building the club up, within it's market. And I don;t think league standard is such an issue, especially when the league introduces measures like 5 VISA players and that combined with the great improvements in the way clubs recruit VISA and Aussie players generally this season, we may actually see a net improvement, if anything due to expansion. Though North Queensland's squad depth, Fowler and some others aside, is a worry, at present.
With the 14th team, we already see serious medium term interest from Tasmania and South Coast. South Coast have been on the table long before Canberra even started up. Surely one of those two will come in, with Canberra (Or West Sydney), come expansion phase 3. Lowy stated a few seasons ago that "12-14 was the goal, atleast in the foreseeable future," or something like that.
If, after the mix, we still have a 15th bid like South Coast still about, come later next decade, we could easily see a consortium come in for Geelong or even Darwin, which is an ever growing market seriously worth considering, in the medium term (10-15 years).
So the question of expansion, there is no question, it WILL expand to 14, and who knows beyond then, but depending on the league's success, the success of all the teams, old and new alike, we may yet grow a little more. And don't forget, this 'B-League' will be coming into play too, so this discussion could interrelate alot with that, especially if we end up with some of these teams, in that league (And woh if Prom/Rel is introduced - but that may not be the case).

Top notch! though might be worth noting that Ben Buckley will examine whether the league is capable of expanding to 14 teams in the foreseeable future or not. Which just could mean our bid might have to wait quite some years...

yea I wish Ben Buckley would come out and say when the next round is likely to take place.
