WORLD CUP TO BENEFIT CANBERRA BID?
With the Socceroos heading to South Africa for another World Cup, football in Australia is expected to continue to boom.
Canberra bid leader Ivan Slavich thinks that not only will the World Cup qualification assist the growth of the game in Canberra it will also add further focus to Canberra's A-League bid.
Slavich told the Canberra Times, ‘‘Obviously it’s a fantastic result and qualifying for the World Cup is extremely important for football in this country and in particular gathering momentum for our A-League bid for Canberra,’’
Socceroos to spark code’s fair advance

Those behind football in Canberra hope Australia’s qualification for next year’s World Cup finals will give the sport an added boost ahead of two crucial decisions.
The Socceroos were one of the first teams to qualify for the showcase event – to be played in South Africa next year – after drawing against Qatar 0-all in Doha.
It is only the third time Australia has qualified for the world’s largest sporting event.
The result comes ahead of Football Federation Australia’s official launch in Canberra next Sunday of its bids to stage the 2018 or 2022 World Cup finals.
The federation is also set to decide next month whether Canberra’s bid for a 12th A-League team has been successful.
Bid leader for A-League4Canberra, Ivan Slavich, said the Doha result would see renewed enthusiasm in the code locally.
‘‘Obviously it’s a fantastic result and qualifying for the World Cup is extremely important for football in this country and in particular gathering momentum for our A-League bid for Canberra,’’
Mr Slavich said. If Canberra’s bid for the A-League license is successful, the team would debut within two months of the Socceroos appearance at the South African tournament.
The Canberra bid faces competition to enter Australia’s premier competition from Western Sydney, South Coast NSW and Tasmania.
Regardless of that result, Mr Slavich said he expected excitement generated by Australia’s appearance at the World Cup finals to push the number of registered soccer players in Canberra well above the present figure of 18,000. ‘‘I would expect the numbers after 2010 to swell beyond 20,000 in Canberra.’’
He said already football had more registered players than both the rugby codes and AFL combined.
Next week is set to see Canberra as the focus for Australian football as the code’s head honchos launch Australia’s bid to host either the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals.
Australia’s main competition for hosting the events is expected to come from England, Russia, the United States, a joint bid from Portugal and Spain, and Mexico.
The launch at Parliament House will be followed next Monday when FFA chairman Frank Lowy and chief executive Ben Buckley speak at the National Press Club.

Na, it will help the bid.
I am sure we will see more interest from Canberrans for football and our A-League team due to our World Cup success.

By getting more interest for the public, to sign up as foundation members. To get out there and spread the word.
