Second Bid Lines Up ANZ Stadium

EXCLUSIVE: A second West Sydney A-League bid has confirmed it will use ANZ Stadium as its home ground if accepted into the competition.

The Joe Meisner-backed bid confirmed today that despite initially favouring Penrith's CUA stadium, ANZ's recession-busting deal has swung the bid.

It's understood the stadium has offered a deal that means a franchise cannot lose money on playing at the 82,000 seat venue - even though it is likely to be largely empty, as it is for many NRL games.

"We're at an advanced stage with ANZ Stadium and I'd say we'd be probably playing out of that stadium for most of our matches," Meisner told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

"I still favour CUA, but the problem is the best I can do is maybe get CUA for nothing, ANZ will pay me to play the team out of there"

ANZ Stadium is also favoured by the Richie Williams-Chris Tanner bid although the 20,000 capacity Parramatta Stadium is the venue of choice for the Paddy Dominguez bid.

The Meisner bid, with Bertie Mariani as CEO, will meet with the FFA on Wednesday to discuss their plans. It's understood a decision on the west Sydney bid will be made in July.

"All we can tell you is the truth and the truth is, we're ready to go," added Meisner.

The Meisner bid did interview Gary Van Egmond for the job of head coach, but the Jets boss took the job as head coach of the AIS football program.

ANZ will be a terrible venue for football with smaller crowds.

TBH i think that western sydney will be a great addition to the league, IMO they could easily get as good crowds as melbourne victory. however like MV i think they have to start at a smaller venue, parramatta is perfect, and play a few blockbuster matches at ANZ and then slowly if the crowds are good enough permanently move their.

IMO the best option would be for the WS owner to fund a capacity upgrade of parra stadium to around 30k then pack that out regularly.

that is a horrible idea!!!!!

if they get in
lets say they will average 9,000
with a stadium that holds 83,000
it will make the crowds look tiny when
lets say if they play at CUA or Parra, those both have around 25,000 - if its packed it will be great but they will never pack ANZ

"lets say they will average 9,000"

They will average more then that... though no doubt the 25000 seater is a better option.

This decision is all about the money. But still, what is the point in doing this if they will lose money but the lack of crowds. really dumb TBH.

TBH IMO western sydney will get crowds in excess of 20K regularly.

as much as i want canberra to get in, i can see the pros of a western sydney.

Firstly, yes Western Sydney will of course be good for the league if they have a successful submission of their proposal.

But secondly, if they do get in and they play there games at ANZ, WS won't be great for the league. Too far away from the heart of Western Sydney. So they don't have a great bid- which leads on too say they may not be great for the league.

This is not a good idea. i hae heard some people say "They will get 20-30k". You are surely having a laugh. Sydney FC can't even crack 10,000- so how will WS get 20,000 let alone 30,000. Parramatta Stadium is ideal. Not only because it will create better atmosphere but because it is the heart of Western Sydney. Good access to the stadium. And good support for them.

ANZ is too far out from the heart and I believe the only time WS should use this stadium is when they have finals games and derbies in the future. SOme time down the track at ANZ? maybe, once they are getting consistent good crowds.

TheBigMan wrote:what about Sydney Showgrounds

I don't think so. Parramatta or Penrith is a lot better quality and that is why the Bulldogs left there. I believe after Bulldogs stopped playing there, they have slightly re-done the stadium and it is now a baseball stadium.

Can't see the baseball getting massive crowds? lol
